Imi Knoebel - Once Upon a Time - White Cube

When I first walked into the white cube gallery I was immediately drawn in by how the work was displayed. The pieces were shown in a massive white room with tall walls and an empty floor. The colours and shapes of the artworks stood out in these room and drew my attention. All the pieces were connected with similar or the same colours which I found very interesting.

In some rooms the artist mainly focuses on red which is a strong overpowering colour which stands out from the rest of the colours in each painting. Whereas in other rooms, the artist uses block colours and focuses more on the shapes of the canvas and placement of each peace. I think this is much more effective because it is more unique and gives an effect I haven’t seen before. Looking at the same shaped but with different colours and rotated in different ways makes me think of how you can sometimes look at one thing and think that’s all there is to it but if you look at it in a different light or a different angle it looks like something different. This can relate to day to day life and small problems we come across.

I have mentioned that I really like how the work is executed using shapes and colours and also how the work is displayed but another thing that I really liked about visiting this gallery was how you can see the reflection of each piece on the gallery floor. I think this is really effective because once again it shows you different angles and different ways of looking at things. I also like how the reflection distorts the painting and gives it a different look.

So far, I have pointed out many things I like about this gallery and the artists work however, my one dislike for this trip is the lack of writing. I struggles a lot finding the titles of each piece and even finding the artist. At the start of each room I think there should have been some text saying who the artist is and what the work is about.

looking forward, I would really like to try using minimalism with colours. I think this is really effective and I would like to see how it works with my own pieces.
